Feast Your Eyes on Kevin Wada’s Handsome Buffy the Vampire Slayer #3 Variant Cover

Giles Goes Full Librarian Daddy

By Steve Foxe | December 3, 2018

Last week, BOOM! Studios showed off the clearest look yet at what to expect from their upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer “reVAMP,” with a full roster of artist Dan Mora’s designs for Sunnydale’s famous residents. Written by Redlands’ Jordie Bellaire and overseen by series creator Joss Whedon, this new take on the franchise resets the clock to the Scooby Gang’s high-school years, but with more contemporary flair. Following years of additional “seasons” at longtime publisher Dark Horse Comics, this more accessible pitch stands to attract both lapsed fans and newer generations who didn’t grow up with Sarah Michelle Gellar and company.

Frequent Mondo poster designer Matt Taylor is providing gorgeous, likeness-perfect primary covers for the launch, along with variants from illustrators like Matt Smith and Scott Buoncristiano, but few artists capture style and attitude like Kevin Wada, who has lent his painted style to everything from Marvel’s She-Hulk and Iceman to Rainbow Rowell book covers to The Wicked + The Divine’s fashion issue.

“There’s a lot of important lessons in Buffy, but one of the most resonant and truest ones is this: librarians are total badasses,” BOOM! Studios Executive Editor Jeanine Schaefer said in a statement. “And, as Kevin Wada dreamily illustrates, they’re pretty easy on the eyes, too. Rupert Giles has a huge role to play in this series and we’ll learn that he’s much more than he appears—and we don’t just mean the fact that, if you haven’t heard, he’s quite good at playing an acoustic version of ‘Stairway to Heaven.’”

Wada contributes variant covers for Buffy’s initial arc, and you can check out an exclusive first look at his artwork for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #3, on shelves March 13th, 2019, below. Be sure to check back at Paste in the coming months as Buffy picks up her wooden stakes once again.

Scott Buoncristiano Homages “Hush” In Buffy The Vampire Slayer #3 Cover

by Hannah Means Shannon

We’re pleased to be the first to reveal a new variant cover for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #3 coming in March from Boom! Studios and created by the horror artist Scott Buoncristiano (Harry Potter: Magical Film Projections, Dead Rabbit).

His cover has been designed as a tribute to the iconic television episode “Hush” in the new series born of a partnership between Boom! Studios and 20th Century Fox Consumer Products. The series is written by Eisner Award-nominated Jordie Bellaire (Redlands) and illustrated by Russ Manning Award-winning artist Dan Mora (Klaus, Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers), along with series creator and story consultant Joss Whedon (the writer/director behind Firefly, Marvel’s The Avengers, and more).

In the third issue of the series, we’ll find “Buffy and the Scooby Gang (the name was Xander’s idea, he’s workshopping it, it probably won’t stick)” uncovering more about Sunnydale’s dark underbelly and making a “shocking discovery” about the nature of the Hellmouth. Drusilla, Spike, and Cordelia will also feature.

As you probably know, Buffy The Vampire Slayer originally premiered on the WB Network on March 10th, 1997 and ran for seven seasons from 1997-2003, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as “Buffy Summers.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer features a main cover by Kevin Wada (She-Hulk), along with a variant cover by Matt Smith (Barbarian Lord).

Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor at Boom! Studios, says of the new cover:

Some episodes of Buffy make you sad or happy or excited or maybe even terrified. But ‘Hush’ made you feel all of them at the same time and it’s one of the reasons it remains a high watermark for storytelling. Scott Buoncristiano’s cover conjures up that emotional stake to the heart perfectly on this cover, as we continue our tribute the best episodes of Buffy.

Print copies of Buffy the Vampire Slayer #3 will be available for sale on March 13th, 2019 exclusively at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the Boom! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the Boom! Studios app.

Who knew I would miss (my least favorite?) Cordelia in the early seasons.

Are we missing "anybody" on these covers?( snerk) Dunno, just the point of watching for many of us fans. (Do we even have to discuss B/A? I am 'where am I' after so many years of being spun?

To answer you re your approach to Angelus "first" showing up, I am not sure if these comics can establish such a convoluted argument on the purpose of a "soul" that stood for identity, immortal good or Godly gift, conscience, personality, super ego, et al others. I imagine, comic, that you are right in your idea that it will be a "presto' kind of spell, as was shown with the gypsies. (Sorry, for the word). I don't know what this approach means in regard to destiny and fate, even if the idea of "control" or lack of it is definitely "up for grabs." (And that means anyone can have their soul removed? Or just 'dead people'--maybe in the condition of approaching "undead" or "coalescing" (consider the reflection in a mirror to show this) toward being 'human." Just playing with your startling idea and finding out it could work!

Hugs!

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer': Exclusive First Look at New Series

By Jamie Lovett - December 13, 2018

Buffy is back! ComicBook.com has an exclusive first look at Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1, kicking off the new series from Boom! Studios.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer comes from Eisner Award-nominated writer Jordie Bellaire (Redlands) and Russ Manning Award-winning artist Dan Mora (Klaus, Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers), with Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon acting as story consultant.

The new series reimagines Buffy the Vampire Slayer from the beginning, putting Buffy Summers and the Scoobies back in high school, but in a world that looks a lot more like our world does today than it did in 1996.

The new series will return to the “high school is hell” concept, with Buffy trying to balance her responsibilities as the Slayer with making new friends at a new school, passing the next pop quiz, and maybe having some fun along the way.

“Once you fight your way through all the monsters of the week and threats around every corner, Buffy is about something we’ve all experienced – the awkward, uncomfortable journey of figuring out who we choose to be. Dan Mora captures the spirit of that struggle with the perfect style and attitude for slaying the monsters hiding in the dark...and in the light of day,” Boom! executive editor Jeanine Schaefer said previously. “As you can see, Jordie and Dan have some huge plans for Buffy and the Gang – starting with some pretty major introductions of characters like Anya and…well, I won’t spoil that one quite yet. But let’s just say by issue #4, it’ll be clear that this is a love letter to the Buffy we all adore and will go in directions that no one ever expected.”

You can see Mora’s original character designs for the new series here.
