Okay, so you're reading fanfic (or even real books) and you come across a phrase or a description that makes you lean back and say, "Huh?"

Or, because it's been overused to death, when you see it, you just wanna stop reading the fic?

Is it just me?

For example, the (R-NC-17) phrase I really hate is "throbbing manhood". I see that and I just...stop dead.

What about you?

It's not much of a specific phrase that throws me off a story's flow, but, have you ever encountered a long story where the author repeats the SAME phrase over and over and over...

good god yes mostly in my OWN writing. I know (or should I say I PRAY) that much of it is from my haste in getting too many fanfics done in a short time to meet deadlines I foolishly signed up for but i find myself using the same descriptions over and over and over. S/he smile. Played with hair, paced. etc etc. Blech.

ugh yup I've fallen into that trap more times then I wanna even think about. I think it's even harder as fan fic writers writing about the same characters not to fall into that trap.

You know I really should pay more attention in my writing classes. My writing teacher was talking about something like this and about how the we (writers in general professional and otherwise) use the same phrasing over and over but when we find a new way to say the same old thing everyone sits up and takes notice. I have to kill the 'leaning against' and 'lip biting'and 'tapped her/his fingers' like crazy as I edit. That is the one reason I'm glad to write short stories.

But, as for annoying description, what about the SAME thing repeated all over fandom about a specific character. Right now I can't think of any for BtVS (though 'spiky hair' is getting there) but in LFN fandom I hate hate HATE when they say 'wavy hair' to describe Michael's. Believe me, after the twentieth time you have memorised how 'wavy' it can be.

I don't know. There's Buffy and her pouty lower lip. The show makes the joke about her using a pout on Giles the one time, and now she's pouting all over the place.

True, but she does pout, a lot. They make a joke about it in Something Blue too. It's mixed in with all that oogly googly spuffy nonsense so it's easy to miss.

"There's that lip. Gonna get it. Gonna get it!"

*points at Kristi*

Hey, if I had to have that flashback, everyone else did, too. Twisted Evil

I can't remember who wrote the story (or where I read it) but it was a hysterical, short piece about Angel listening to Willow and Buffy talk about him and how he'd been...distant...lately. He was mentally running through the various shades of blonde Buffy's hair had been - and gave a great description of the various shades! So, yeah, Kristi has a point about the "learning to use different phrases to mean the same thing".

lol this would be amusing to read because I can only imagine Angel's running commentary about that.

This is one of those cases where, I think the flaw starts at the beginning. Do we really need to describe Pubic Hair?

I guess that with the absolutely *huge* amount of porn - sorry, erotica - written by the fans, it's inevitable that phrases will be repeated over and over again, but goodness, doesn't it make your jaw almost dislocate with yawning?

Frankly, Buffy and Angel/Angelus etc have done it in every single conceivable (and inconceivable) position and place. They've moaned and gasped and cried out while wriggling, thrashing, thrusting, rocking and pumping. They've released, climaxed, come, fallen over the edge, exploded and reached their pinnacles. They've kissed, sucked, licked, nibbled, bitten and suckled every single inch of each others magnificent, glorious, wonderful, honey coloured, alabaster and marble bodies.

Come on you two - surely a cup of tea and a night in front of the TV would be a pleasant change for you both? Very Happy

Wonderful, Lisa!! Absolutely wonderful!

And now, unfortunately, they tend to be doing it even more often, because there's so much of this porn around, but now it's almost always in some pointless, hopeless, angsty way, and often graphically nastily hopeless and, well, maybe not quite pointless, but you know what I mean...

Confused

Just a thought... Do you think there's the makings of a new Kama Sutra in there somewhere? I mean, even Mrs Beeton never actually tried all the recipes she published...
